First look at Immortals of Aveum

Brett Robbins is the creative director of Ascendant Studios; you'll know him for games like COD / Dead Space / Lord of the Rings and 007.

First look at Immortals of Aveum

A single-player magic shooter utilising the full scope of Unreal engine.

This upcoming game is brought to us by a new studio: Ascendant Studios. You might not have heard of this new studio or the brains behind this, Brett Robbins – who is the creative director of Ascendant Studios, but you would have heard of some of the games he has worked on – we’re talking some of the most popular games of all time; COD / Dead Space / Lord of the Rings and 007.

Never did magic and FPS combine so well than in this new game.

Immortals of Aveum which is set in the high fantasy world of Aveum. That is in turmoil over the control of magic. Cue our reluctant hero Jak – who is known as a Battlemage and has the rare ability to wield the three different types of magic in the world; Blue – force, Red – chaos and Green – life.

Jak, whose abilities manifested later in his life, is not keen on trying to end a war that has been going on for decades.

The Immortals of Aevum, selfless magic-wielding individuals who have taken it upon themselves to save the world.

However, the immortals of Aevum, who I would liken to superheroes, selfless magic-wielding individuals who have taken it upon themselves to save the world, need Jak’s help and his rare ability to wield the trifactor of magic. Especially since they are up against some pretty heavy hitters – enter stage left Sandrakk, your nemesis who is hell-bent on taking control of magic for himself. Like any good supervillain, he has an army of minions to carry out his devious plans, including his right-hand person, only known as The Hand.

Jak and the immortals must master their magic!

Jak and his elite band of immortals must master their magic – learn how to control the three colours of magic and save a world on the edge of an abyss. Simple really.

This is a first-look review – so though we got to look at the game and interact with the developers, we could not play it.

What did I really think about this new game?

Does this mean I am not excited? Of course not. I am a big fan of FPS and an even bigger fan of magic – very strong LOTR and GOT vibes here – it is an open world, and we are taking about 25+ hours of a campaign – that is a healthy time to really dive into the story of this place – that from what we’ve seen looks visually stunning. Again, that Unreal engine is being put to work and it shows. Casting spells and having a fantasy backdrop will make for some stunning visuals, and from what we’ve seen, it looks like it is shaping up to be a great game that will appeal to a wide range of audiences.

The game is out in July on next-gen consoles and PCN on July the 20th 2023.

We want to Thank EA for giving us early access to this preview.
