About Us

Melanin Gamers is dedicated to increasing diversity and inclusion in the video games industry.  It is more than a gaming community it is a show of support, a cry for some desperately needed change and as a safe space, an online and in real life community for people of colour to come together, share ideas and feel represented. We want to be seen and heard. It is a necessity in the current climate we are living in and we believe that by creating this platform we will be able to strive towards changing an industry so that it reflects all those who are part of it. We are not calling for needless tokenism but a real shift in the tide, from the grassroots to the very top.

Our Mission

MG at its heart is a group of dedicated advocates committed to improving representation in popular media. As part of our mission, we regularly hold panel discussions, workshops and presentations on industry-relevant topics which aim to empower and educate. We have previously worked with schools, colleges, business and major industry events to advocate the need for better representation and to provide a platform for others to access and thrive in the video games industry.

  • Howdy!

    I am Annabel or CreativelyAnzy as I’m known as online! I am the founder of Melanin Gamers: a gaming community that promotes diversity and inclusivity in the video games industry.

  • Why did you create MG?

    I was tired of not being represented in an industry that I love and am also a patron of.

  • Biggest gaming moment

    Winning a game all by myself with Wattson in Apex #thathardcarry

  • Favourite game and why?

    My favourite game is Assassin’s Creed because: visuals, storyline, gameplay and it’s enjoyable.

  • Greatest gaming hero and Biggest Villain

    Favourite gaming hero is Ellie from The Last Of Us, because she is one tough cookie. Villain or rather anti-hero is Jason Todd aka The Arkham Knight.

    As the principal researcher for Melanin Gamers, I ensure all the data and facts are well-sourced, and opinions are always backed up with fact; to guarantee an informative and well-received panel.

  • Why did you join MG?

    Promoting diversity has always been exceptionally important to me, but it wasn’t until July 2018 that I actively began to do something about this. I became a part of Melanin Gamers during its inception process: Melanin Gamers is a gaming community that promotes diversity and inclusivity in the video games industry, whiles also providing a safe space for people of colour (BAME) to come together and game.

  • Biggest gaming moment

    Lifeline just standing in Gibby’s alt completely impervious to the damage she was taking.

  • Favourite game and why?

    My favourite game would probably be Micro Maniacs. It is a PS1 classic and I don’t expect many people to know it but that would probably be the defacto game that got me into gaming, it was a racing game with a twist where you ran instead drove cars and all the missions were fun and different.

  • Greatest gaming hero and Biggest Villain

  • Why did you join MG?

    I was tired of not being represented in an industry that I love and am also a patron of.

  • Biggest gaming moment

    Taking on a supergroup on The Division with just my friend and absolutely owned them for over an hour before they finally quit.

  • Favourite game and why?

    Saints Row 2: It was a game way ahead of its time in relation to the things you could do but it also had a good storyline and memorable characters which you feel for as the story develops.

  • Greatest gaming hero and Biggest Villain

    Master Chief is my guy!/Vas from Far Cry best bad guy.

  • Howdy!

    I’m OG Otaku or TJ if you're familiar. I am the community manager for Melanin Gamers working closely with many of our members on a variety of different projects, as well as working with the MG team to curate enjoyable events and activities for the members of our community to enjoy.

  • Why did you join MG?

    I Joined Melanin Gamers after being a follower of their content an events for sometime, I was inspired by the work MG was doing in the gaming industry and wanted to create a platform where I could represent myself and discuss Games and Anime I was passionate about.

  • Biggest gaming moment

    Winning my first solo crown victory royal in Fortnite.

  • Favourite game and why?

    Skyrim/Fallout 4 I love the open world and freedom of choice for character creation and story decisions. I’ve have put hundreds of hours in both games through multiple console generations and every time is a new experience.

  • Greatest gaming hero and Biggest Villain

    Hero - Me as I enjoy and play single player games where I can create and customise my own character and make my own choices on how to save the world. Also any character I create will have the best drip possible. Villain - Xehanort from Kingdom Hearts. Man was a multiversal hater who linked up with other hater versions of himself to reset all that we know via the manipulation of peoples hearts and emotions. Gigantic Wasteman.

  • Howdy!

    As a seasoned gaming co-ordinator, James has organised countless online and in-person events in Ghana.

  • Why did you join MG?

    I joined MG after meeting Annabel and helping them out with a few events in Ghana. Which made me realize that MG is different and actually wanted to do some good, put gamers and non-gamers first and help then develop their skills and link them to possible opportunities locally and globally instead of personal gain or glory.

  • Biggest gaming moment

    First penta kill in league of legends.

  • Favourite game and why?

    Back then DMC, now league of legends. DMC for the skill moves league of legends the love hate affair. Big community, ever changing game and constant high skill ceiling.

  • Greatest gaming hero and Biggest Villain

    Actually have none for this one. Such a huge roster to pick one.

We are very proud of our MG Squad and the feeling is mutual.

Melanin Gamers has opened up a whole new community of content creators and gamers that I would have never found on my own. This community is very supportive and open to everyone. Being a part of this community provides streamers with a sense of belonging and is constantly developing and evolving to become one of if not the best community on twitch, mixer, YouTube, and Facebook gaming. Being a part of this stream team has breathed new life into my own stream as well. In a word...Melanin Gamers is awesome.

The first time I saw the name "Melanin Gamers", I immediately knew it was something I needed to be a part of. It took me a long time to not only appreciate the Melanin in my skin but find other gamers who look like me who also play/enjoy similar games so finding this inclusive space was a breath of fresh air. Also, the founder/creator Anzy was a huge reason as to why I wanted to part of this community. Anzy is kind, supportive, inspiring & a huge motivation to me. Her & the MG Squad welcomed me with open arms without hesitation and we all instantly became family. Melanin Gamers is a community & brand I'm proud to represent and also glad to see continue to grow. Most importantly Melanin Gamers promotes diversity, positivity & inclusivity to all whilst also advocating for people of color who are Gamers which aligns with my personal morals and values"

I am struggling to find where I belong in the gaming world. Being a woman of color and gaming don’t seem to be things that typically go together and when I found out there was a group like this I was star struck! I love defying stereotypes, and being proud of my color. To the question you’re probably wondering right now, if you’ve seen my picture. I’m Black and Mexican. My Mexican father left before I was born so I was raised by my beautiful black mama in seas of cornbread and box braids. I am apart of the African American Honorary at my school, and it has been my school home. So to find an even more niche family for me in the gaming world would be wonderful. I feel like when I leave school I don’t have people to really connect with.
